Choose the right depth for your project
Depth changes the amount of material more than most people expect. These starting points work well for common Alabama landscaping projects, but slopes, drainage, settling, and the existing grade may change what your project needs.
Mulch
Use about 2 to 3 inches for most landscape beds. Keep mulch pulled back from trunks and plant stems.
Soil
Use 6 to 12 inches for new planting areas, raised beds, or lawn and grade adjustments depending on the project.
Gravel or stone
Use 3 to 4 inches for paths and light-use areas. Driveways and heavier traffic areas may need a deeper compacted base.

- Plan where the delivery truck can safely place the pile. A wheelbarrow route can save a lot of time on installation day.

At 3 inches deep, 1,000 square feet requires about 9.26 cubic yards. In practice, many customers round up to 9.5 or 10 cubic yards depending on the shape and condition of the area.
What is the formula for cubic yards?
Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in inches, then divide by 324. For example, 200 square feet at 3 inches deep is 200 x 3 / 324, or about 1.85 cubic yards.
