Ordering bulk landscape materials is one of the easiest ways to save time on a yard project. Instead of hauling bag after bag from a big box store, you can have mulch, gravel, soil, sand, pine straw, or river rock brought closer to where the work is happening.
A little preparation makes the delivery smoother. At High Country Landscape Supply, we help homeowners, contractors, and businesses around Alabaster and the Birmingham area get the right materials to the right place. Before your next delivery, use this checklist to avoid delays, extra shuffling, and confusion on delivery day.
Know What Material You Are Ordering
Start by confirming the material and quantity. Mulch, topsoil, gravel, crusher run, river rock, and sand all behave differently once they are delivered. A pile of mulch is easier to move by wheelbarrow than a pile of stone. A load of crusher run is heavy and should be dropped close to where it will be spread or compacted.
If you are still figuring out how much you need, use our Mulch Calculator or call us before ordering. Guessing too low can slow the project down. Guessing too high can leave you with a pile that has nowhere to go.
Pick a Safe Drop Spot
Choose a flat, accessible area before the truck arrives. The best drop spot is usually a driveway, paved parking area, or another firm paved surface. Delivery vehicles need room to enter, position safely, unload, and leave without damaging the property.
One important note: our delivery vehicles remain on paved surfaces. That helps protect your yard, irrigation, septic areas, and the truck. If your project is in the backyard, plan how you will move the material from the delivery spot to the work area.
Clear the Area Ahead of Time
Move vehicles, trailers, trash cans, toys, hoses, and patio furniture before delivery. If the driver has to wait while the area is cleared, it can slow down your order and the next delivery on the route.
It also helps to mark the drop zone with cones, buckets, or a tarp. If someone else will be home for the delivery, make sure they know exactly where the material should go.
Protect Surfaces When Needed
For some deliveries, a tarp can make cleanup easier. This is especially helpful with mulch, pine straw, topsoil, and sand. Gravel and larger rock may be too heavy or abrasive for a light tarp, so ask us what makes sense for your material.
If your driveway is decorative, stained, or newly poured, mention that when scheduling. We can talk through the best practical approach for your delivery.
Think Through Access and Timing
Make sure gates are open, pets are secured, and low-hanging branches are not blocking access. If your street is narrow or your driveway has a sharp turn, let us know when you schedule. Small details make a big difference with bulk delivery.
It is also smart to schedule delivery close to when you plan to use the material. Mulch and soil can sit for a while, but most homeowners prefer not to have a pile in the driveway any longer than needed.
Have Tools Ready
Before the material arrives, gather the tools you will need: wheelbarrow, shovel, rake, gloves, landscape fabric, edging, or compactor depending on the project. If you are spreading mulch or pine straw, plan your bed edges first. If you are working with gravel or crusher run, make sure your base area is graded and ready.
